Thanksgiving and Veterinary Clinic

( Sonia ) Hi Miree, My husband and I, with our young dog, relocated to Jakarta in early October. We have been living between Jakarta and Puncak for 1 month, we spend most time in Puncak due to the climate. I would like to have someone cater our Thanksgiving Dinner to our home in Jakarta. Back in the States, I always cook the complete meal myself. Here, I don't have the kitchen nor the equipment to do that. I came across a contact from your 2008 blog about Thanksgiving Dinner....
Mary Ann Wiley
The Upper Crust
Sekolah Duta I, No. 15-A Pondok Indah Jakarta
765-4476 , 0818-168-710
Is this contact still good?
Also will you please tell me more places to do American grocery besides Kem Chicks, Ranch Market and Carrefour. I am an avid cook and baker so would like to know more places that sell ingredients for cooking and baking. Also do you know of a good veterinary Clinic in Jakarta?
Thank you beforehand and I have added your blog in to my favorite.

( Miree ) Dear Sonia,

You can check Thanksgiving listing in WhatsNewJakarta.com - http://www.whatsnewjakarta.com/web3/event/EventList.php?cboGroup=65 or contact Mary Ann Wiley.

New to Jakarta

(Adriana) Hello Miree,
Your email was forwarded to me by Peter Wharton who suggested I contacted you for advice on living in Jakarta. My family and are moving this October 5th and I'm a bit concearned about health and safety systems there. I have a healthy 2 year old son however am very concearned about cleanliness, pollution in the city, etc. Also, if you know of any babysitting companies that you'd recommend I'd greatly appreciate it!

As I'd mentioned to Peter, I'm interested in knowing what is like living in Jakarta as a Westerner, is the health system considerably OK? How is the international schooling system for young international kids, are there any business associations? (I'm a Marketing Communications/PR professional), support groups for foreigners besides de Embassy related groups, what are the things to watch out for regarding climate, food, pollution, environment in general, people, safety (meaning civil and health).

My husband and I lived in Beijing for 3 years (from '05-'08) and loved it except the traffic and pollution. We thereafter moved to Buenos Aires and have been here for 1 1/2 years and now are getting ready to move again!
Any advice you can provide we would greatly appreciate it!
Regards

(Miree) Hi Adriana, It is only natural to be anxious when you are moving to a new Country with a young child. Like Beijing, Jakarta has pollution and the traffic is unmentionable, but the international schooling from preschool up is of a high standard. In regards to medical providers the two that are recommended are International SOS & Global Doctors. I will send you a separate e-mail with further information and some attachments to assist you, as there is quite a lot to cover. Regards, Miree.

Appropriate gifts for Idul Fitri

(Sally) Hi Miree, This is our first Idul Fitri in Jakarta and I am wondering what would be an appropriate gift to give to our staff - We have an older housemaid, a young nanny and our driver has young children to whom I would also like to give a gift. Regards, Sally.

Hi Sally, for every year your staff work for you, under Manpower regulations you are required to give them an extra months salary and any additional like a food parcel, clothing or train tickets etc... is entirely up to the individual employer. If they have worked for you for less than a year you can choose to do it on a pro rata basis. For example if they have worked for you for one or two months, you may choose to give them each a five kg bag of rice or a parcel made up of oil, noodles, sugar, tea, Kapal Api (local coffee) etc.. or Rp100,000. One thing you do need to remember is that anything additional to money you give will be expected each year for Idul Fitri. If you decide to go down the food parcel route Lotte Mart (ex MAKRO) or Carrefour have very reasonably priced ready made food parcels available and also clothing and toys. All the best, Miree.

Moving to Jakarta

(David) Hi Miree, My name is David, I currently live in New Zealand, and I am looking at
relocating to Jakarta in the near future. I am currently working as a
Premium Service Japanese Interpreter flight attendant. I also hold a
Diploma in Hotel/Motel Management, with prior experience in
Sales/Marketing. Do you have any advice on what sort of job I can
expect. Also how I would go about applying for a job. I am heading to
Jakarta for ten days on the 9th of September. Do you know any
recruitment contacts I would be able to contact?
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Thanks, and regards,

(Miree) Hi David, it's not often I get to assist a fellow country man. This
might sound obvious, but many agencies do a little bit of everything,
and you really need to find a recruitment firm that's an expert in your
field/s as in your case. I have listed three recommended recruitment
companies below for you to contact.

Art Lover

Dear Miree
I'm a fan of your blog. Terrific work!
Do you know where I can go to get affordable artworks (paintings, scuptures) by young budding Indonesian arttists? I've been asking some locals if there are special exhibitions by universities/small galleries but no one seems to know.
Appreciate it if you can point the way. Many thanks.
Art Lover

(Miree) Dear Art Lover, as does not seem to be openly publicized, my suggestion would be to visit Galeri 678 in Jl Kemang Raya No.125A. They are open Mon-Sunfrom 10.00 – 18.00hrs, ph:7179-9648, and are known to hold exhibitions of Indonesian Artists. They may be able to shed some light on where you could find artworks by young budding Indonesian artists if they don’t have any on display in the shop. Happy searching, Miree.

VIP escort through customs?

(Sally) Hi Miree, my ageing parents are visiting us in Jakarta in May and are a bit apprehensive about getting through the airport. You mentioned at a recent newcomers lunch at ANZA that you can book someone to meet them at the plane and escort them through customs. Can you please let me know how I can arrange this and how much it will cost. Thanks

(Miree) Hi Sally, contact person at the airport for the VIP Airport Assistance is Pak Suratijo and his mobile number is: +628151854254. For the cost you will need to ask him directly, as there may have been a price increase. His English is also limited, so you will need to practice your best Bahasa. Regards.

Also if possible their phone numbers and addresses aswell.I would like to know where to go shopping when i get there. Oh.. Also how much on the average does a vehicle cost there from small 4 door to minivan front wheel drive...whats the price range...even for pickup truck and cars in general.

Gem Stones

(Adnan) Dear Miree, I am looking to buy gem stones jewellery. Do you any place that sells them in Jakarta? Thanks and regards

(Miree) Hi Adnan, are you looking to buy just the gems or ready made jewelry with gem stones? If you are looking for just stones I would suggest you go to Pasar Rawabening on JL Raya Bekasi, Jakarta Timur. For ready made jewelry with gem stones take a wander through Plaza Melawai in Blok M, there are many stalls there that have ready made gem stone jewelry in white & yellow gold and have trays of stones you can ask to see to have made up if you are not supplying your own. Both these places are favorites of mine, enjoy, Miree.

Coffee Luwat

(Luwat Hunter) Dear Miree, Sorry to disturb you again. It's just that you seem to know everything and it would be really silly of me not to approach you. Several friends of mine told me that Indonesia is famous for coffee luwat. I saw some at the Sogo Food Hall but I am not sure if they are good AND authentic. Any tips on where I can find the best coffee luwat? Much appreciated.

Dear Luwat Hunter, I haven’t tried it myself as can’t get past where it comes from. There are several shops that sell coffee blends with Copi Luwat, but the good stuff at premium prices can be purchased at the Copi Luwat Shop in the basement of Pacifc Place opposite Kem chicks. Regards, Miree.

Butter Milk Lover

Dear Butter Milk Lover, you ask me quite some time ago where you could buy some and you will be pleased to know that I have finally tracked some down for you. There is a new meat market called Mastro in Jl Woltermonginsidi No. 36, in Kebayoran Baru who apart from imported meat has a small grocery line and they had Dairy Farmers Butter Milk from Australia in stock, cheers, Miree.

The main difference between http:/// and https://

It's all about keeping you secure** HTTP stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol.

The S (big surprise) stands for "Secure".. If you visit a website or webpage, and look at the address in the web browser, it will likely begin with the following: http://.
This means that the website is talking to your browser using the regular 'unsecure' language. In other words, it is possible for someone to "eavesdrop" on your computer's conversation with the website. If you fill out a form on the website, someone might see the information you send to that site. This is why you never ever enter your credit card number in an http website! But if the web address begins with
https://, that basically means your computer is talking to the website in a secure code that no one can eavesdrop on. You understand why this is so important, right? If a website ever asks you to enter your credit card information, you should automatically look to see if the web address begins with https://.If it doesn't, You should NEVER enter sensitive information....such as a credit card number.

INDONESIA VISA REGULATIONS

The government of Indonesia has changed its visa policy for foreign tourists effective February 1st., 2004.

Visiting Indonesia Without Any Visa

Entering Indonesia without any visa is possible now only for nationals of the following 11 countries and territories: Brunei Darussalam, Chile, Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia, Morocco, Peru, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Citizens of the above countries will be issued on arrival a stay permit for 30 days free of charge upon presentation of a passport which is valid at least for another 6 months. This stay permit cannot be extended or converted into another type of visa.

VISA on ARRIVAL (VoA)

This facility is now available for nationals of the following countries: Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, Fiji, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Hungary, Iceland, India, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Laos, Latvia, Libya, Lichtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Maldives, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, New Zealand, Norway, Oman, Panama, People's Republic of China, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Suriname, Switzerland, Sweden, Taiwan, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and the United States of America.

Citizens of these countries will be able to apply for a VoA valid for 30 days upon arrival by air in Bali, Jakarta and a few other international airports or by ship at a limited number of Indonesian sea ports. A 30-day visa costs US$25 and is extendable for another 30 days. Be aware that Immigration officials calculate the 30-day period as follows: your arrival day is counted as your first day, and you must leave the country on the 30th. or 60th. day!

How to Obtain the "VISA on ARRIVAL" (VoA)

Travelers from the above countries must be in possesion of a passport which is valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival and the completed embarkation/disembarkation card they received from their airline. They must also be able to prove they have sufficient funds for their stay in Indonesia.

Arriving travelers with Visa-On-Arrival status have to go first to one of the "VoA Counters" to pay the appropriate fee and have their passports stamped with the VoA before proceeding to the Immigration Clearance Desk. An official bank is part of the VoA service counters. Payment of visa fees can be made in all major currencies or by VISA or MASTERCARD.
